The book tells the story of the love that develops between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius. The story takes place in the city of Rome under the rule of emperor Nero.

First published in 1895, this edition is derived from the book published in 1905 with 18 black and white illustrations and author portrait by Jan Styka. As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.
