Knut Hamsun was a Norwegian novelist whose fiction explores desire, isolation and unsettled states of mind. His characters often struggle to understand their own motives and relationships. Natural landscapes can intensify the uncertainty of personal experience. His writing helped develop a closely inward approach to the modern novel.
