Explore Thornton Burgess books at New West Press.

Thornton Burgess populates the woods, meadows, and ponds with characters whose troubles make animal behavior memorable. The Adventures of Reddy Fox, The Adventures of Johnny Chuck, and The Adventures of Jimmy Skunk are among the stories gathered here. Old Mother West Wind and related volumes expand that storytelling world, while The Burgess Bird Book, The Burgess Animal Book, and The Burgess Flower Book bring a more sustained natural history focus. Readers can move between a short animal adventure and a broader introduction to the creatures and plants around them.

Readers can carry this interest in the natural world beyond the page by observing a garden, park, pond, or woodland. Compare the author's descriptions with what you actually see, and distinguish storytelling from direct observation. A nature journal can hold sketches, questions, and new vocabulary. These books offer a literary companion to curiosity about familiar creatures and their surroundings.
