Alfred John Church was an English classical scholar, educator, and writer, best known for his accessible retellings of classical literature. Born in London, Church was educated at King's College London and Lincoln College, Oxford. He later served as a teacher and headmaster, including a notable tenure at University College School in London.

Church gained fame for his works that adapted classical Greek and Roman literature for young readers, including Stories from Homer (1878), Stories from Virgil (1879), and Stories from Livy (1882). His clear, engaging prose brought ancient myths and history to life, making them more relatable for a general audience. Church also wrote scholarly translations and commentaries on classical texts.

In addition to his literary work, Church lectured widely on classical topics and was deeply committed to promoting education. His contributions to classical studies made the ancient world more accessible and enduringly influential.
