Arthur Ransome

1884-1967

Arthur Ransome was an English author and journalist best known for the Swallows and Amazons series. His stories follow resourceful children as they sail, camp, explore, and turn familiar landscapes into worlds of adventure. Practical detail and imaginative play work together in books that take young people's interests and responsibilities seriously.

Born in Leeds, Ransome developed an early attachment to the Lake District through family holidays. He moved to London to pursue writing, producing literary studies and other books before traveling to Russia. There he collected folklore and worked as a journalist, experiences reflected in Old Peter's Russian Tales and his reporting on the country's upheavals.

After returning to England, he drew on his enthusiasm for sailing and the countryside to create Swallows and Amazons. The series ranges from northern lakes to the waterways of East Anglia, with maps and carefully described activities helping readers follow each expedition. His sailing narrative Racundra's First Cruise shows another side of the same interests. Across his work, curiosity about places and pleasure in practical adventure remain recurring themes.
