Gladys Wynne

1876-1968

Gladys Wynne was an Irish watercolor artist and writer whose Architecture Shown to the Children introduces young readers to the beauty and history of buildings. Better known for her landscape painting, she brought an artist's attention to shape, space, and detail to her writing. Her book encourages readers to look closely at the structures around them.

Wynne spent much of her life in Glendalough, County Wicklow, where the lakes, mountains, and changing atmosphere became recurring subjects in her paintings. Her artistic education and travels also took her to Florence, Rome, and Germany. These experiences broadened the range of buildings and landscapes she observed, connecting her local practice with a wider European artistic inheritance.

She exhibited regularly with the Watercolour Society of Ireland and also showed work with the Belfast Art Society and Dublin Sketching Club. Her subjects included places across Ireland as well as scenes encountered abroad. In both painting and writing, Wynne invited attention to surroundings that could easily be overlooked. Her architectural introduction extends that invitation to children, treating close observation as the beginning of appreciation and understanding.
