Mary Johnston

Mary Johnston

1870-1936

Mary Johnston was a prolific American author and suffragist known for her historical novels and advocacy for women's rights. Born in Buchanan, Virginia, Johnston grew up in a family steeped in Southern history and culture. Her father was a Confederate soldier, and her upbringing amid the remnants of the Civil War deeply influenced her later works. Johnston was largely self-educated, using her father’s extensive library to develop her literary skills and knowledge of history. Her strong imagination and love for storytelling blossomed into a remarkable writing career that would make her one of the most celebrated authors of her time.

Johnston’s literary career took off with the publication of her first novel, Prisoners of Hope (1898), which was followed by the widely acclaimed To Have and to Hold (1900). The latter became a massive bestseller, establishing her as a leading voice in historical fiction. Her novels often blended rich historical detail with compelling narratives, focusing on themes of adventure, romance, and the complexities of human relationships. Johnston wrote more than 20 books, including Audrey (1902), The Long Roll (1911), and Cease Firing (1912), which vividly depicted the Civil War and its aftermath. She was one of the first American women to gain international fame as a novelist.

Beyond her literary achievements, Mary Johnston was an advocate for women’s suffrage and social reform. She used her platform to speak out against gender inequality and supported movements aimed at improving women’s rights. Despite facing criticism for her outspoken beliefs, Johnston remained steadfast in her activism. By the time of her death in 1936, she had left an enduring legacy as both a trailblazing writer and a social activist.
