Mary Mapes Dodge

was an American author and editor best known for Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates, a children's novel set in the Netherlands. Its story of a struggling family, personal integrity, and a skating competition helped introduce generations of readers to an imagined Dutch landscape. Her influence also extended through her long editorship of St. Nicholas magazine.
