The book tells the story of the love that develops between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius. The story takes place in the city of Rome under the rule of emperor Nero.

First published in 1895, this edition is derived from the book published in 1905 with 18 black and white illustrations and author portrait by Jan Styka. As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.

Henryk Sienkiewicz

was a Polish novelist best known for Quo Vadis and his trilogy of historical adventures set in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. His fiction combines dramatic action, romance, and moral conflict with vividly imagined settings. At a time when Poland was divided among foreign powers, his historical writing gave many readers a powerful connection to their national past.
