A collection of narrative poems by Thomas Babington Macaulay that retells legendary episodes from the early history of Rome. Written in a stirring, ballad-like style, the poems celebrate courage, patriotism, sacrifice, and civic virtue through stories of warriors, tyrants, prophets, and common citizens who shape Rome’s destiny. The most famous poem, “Horatius,” tells of Horatius Cocles and his companions defending the bridge over the Tiber against an invading army.

First published in 1842, this edition is derived from the book published in 1881 with 29 black & white illustrations by J. R. Weguelin. As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.
