A Story of Backwoods Life in Indiana

Set in Flat Creek, Indiana during the middle of the 19th-century, the story follows the experiences of the new schoolteacher, Ralph Hartsook. The novel is based on experiences of the author’s brother, George Cary Eggleston, who had been a schoolteacher in rural Indiana. The novel is credited for its realistic depictions of rural life and use of local dialect.
