The heart of the story covers the three weeks Parkman spent hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux. The book was originally entitled The California & Oregon Trail and was serialized in 21 installments in Knickerbocker’s Magazine.

First published in 1849, this edition is derived from the original book with 2 black & white illustrations and 1 map of the Oregon trail and surrounding territory. As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.

was an American historian and travel writer best known for The Oregon Trail and the series France and England in North America.
