The Life of an English Gentleman

Rudolf V of Ruritania is about to be crowned king when he is drugged on the eve of his coronation and is unable to attend the ceremony. Fortuitously, his distant relative, Englishman Rudolf Rassendyll, is visiting his kingdom and bears a striking resemblance to the king. Believing fate has sent Rassendyll, the king’s attendants persuade him to take Rudolf V’s place at the coronation.

Anthony Hope

was an English novelist and playwright best known for The Prisoner of Zenda and its sequel, Rupert of Hentzau. His adventures in the imaginary kingdom of Ruritania combine royal intrigue, mistaken identity, romance, and divided loyalties. Their success helped establish a distinctive tradition of stories set in invented European kingdoms.
