Thomas Hughes

was an English novelist, lawyer, social reformer, and politician best known as the author of Tom Brown’s Schooldays. Born in Uffington, Berkshire, he attended Rugby School under the influential headmaster Thomas Arnold before studying at Oriel College, Oxford. His experiences at Rugby shaped his ideals of courage, fellowship, Christian character, and fair play—values that would later form the heart of his most famous novel.
