Leonora Blanche Lang

Leonora Blanche Lang

1851-1933

Leonora Blanche Lang (née Alleyne) was a British writer, editor, and translator, best known for her significant contributions to Andrew Lang's "Fairy Books" series. Born in Clifton, Bristol, England, she was highly educated and fluent in several languages, enabling her to play a key role in the translation and adaptation of fairy tales from various cultures.

Leonora collaborated closely with her husband, the Scottish poet and folklorist Andrew Lang, on the famous collection of Coloured Fairy Books, which included stories from around the world. Although Andrew Lang’s name appeared as the editor, Leonora undertook much of the work, selecting, translating, and refining the tales to make them suitable for young readers. Her talent for preserving the charm of the original stories while making them accessible was central to the series’ enduring popularity.

Beyond her work on fairy tales, Leonora also translated other works and contributed to scholarly and literary projects, although much of her work was overshadowed by her husband’s more prominent reputation. She remained a quiet yet influential figure in Victorian and Edwardian literature, shaping children’s storytelling traditions. Leonora passed away in 1933, leaving a legacy of timeless tales that continue to inspire readers of all ages.
