The story follows the adventures of a young Englishman, Nathaniel, or Nat for short, whose journey takes him to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, where he witnesses firsthand the brutal aftermath of the Haitian Revolution. The island is divided between the French colony of Saint-Domingue and the newly formed Republic of Haiti, which is plagued by political instability, and economic hardship.

First published in 1899, this edition is derived from the original book with 12 black & white illustrations by William Rainey. As always, this edition is complete and unabridged.
