Belloc provides a broad overview of the economic history of Europe starting with the ancient pagan states through medieval Christendom to modern capitalism. Analyzing capitalism further, Belloc sees as it as inherently unstable. Belloc also views attempts of his day to reform capitalism as leading almost inexorably to an economy in which state regulation removes the freedom of capitalism thereby replacing capitalism with the Servile State.
